eIDAS
The eIDAS Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 910/2014) was introduced in 2016 and specifies EU law for electronic identification and trust services. The primary purposes of the regulation are as follows:
-
Specify the rules under under which EU countries recognise electronic identities issued by other EU countries.
-
Define the rules for trust services operating across the EU.
-
Establish a legal framework for electronic signatures, electronic seals, electronic time stamps, electronic documents, electronic registered delivery services and certificate services for website authentication.

eIDAS has had a significant effect on the adoption of electronic signatures in the EU, the trust services landscape, and is still in its infancy. The adoption of eIDAS across the EU is accelerating as more organisations are legally required to comply with aspects of eIDAS, or simply want to support the high levels of trustworthiness and legal assurance that eIDAS services can provide.
