The electronic signature, trust services and eIDAS landscape is heavily governed by policies and standards.
Although there are many organisations involved in the development of related standards, ETSI (etsi.org) is the most prominent organisation and has been active in the development of relevant standards for many years through the ETSI technical committee for Electronic Signatures and Infrastructures.
Many of the published ETSI standards are now used as the foundation upon which a significant number of EU and global trust services are built. In particular, for eIDAS related trust services, compliance with the relevant ETSI standard(s) is used by almost all trust service providers to demonstrate they meet the requirements of the eIDAS regulation.
